TMJ is pain in the joint of your jawbone. The exact causes of TMJ discomfort is often difficult to determine. Your pain may be due to a combination of factors, such as genetics, arthritis or jaw injury. Some people who have jaw pain also tend to clench or grind their teeth, although many people who grind and clench never develop symptoms.
In most cases the pain is temporary and can be relieved with self-managed care. In other cases, a course of physical therapy to reduce pain, evaluate body mechanics and instruction regarding stretching techniques is needed.
TMJ treatment is usually covered by insurance, but we always pre-authorize patient’s insurance benefits. We also recommend our patients contact their insurance carrier to verify their benefits.
