TMJ is a pain in the joint of your jawbone. The exact causes of TMJ discomfort are often difficult to determine. Your pain may be due to a combination of factors, like genetics, arthritis, or jaw injuries.
Some people who have jaw pain also tend to clench or grind their teeth. Many people who grind and clench never develop symptoms. Though, this could be a contributing factor.
In most cases, pain is temporary and can be relieved with self-managed care. In other cases, physical therapy is used to reduce pain, evaluate body mechanics, and provide instruction regarding stretching techniques.
TMJ treatment is usually covered by insurance. However, we always pre-authorize the patient’s insurance benefits. We recommend patients contact their insurance carrier to verify their benefits.
